The BasicsAs the foundation for the sacramental life, baptism:
Fundamentally, the ritual involves the priest pouring water on the candidate's head while saying: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (CCC 1284). The sacrament of baptism, like all sacraments, includes symbols:
Scripture & BaptismScripture repeatedly notes the importance of baptism as more than a mere symbol. Some of the relevant verses are:
"I confess one baptism..."As we say in the Nicene Creed, “I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins…” For this reason, a person can only be baptized once.
