Some Traditional Prayers

Can't I just say whatever is on my mind

instead of using "form prayers"?

Of course! But sometimes it's nice to fall into the meditation and rhythm of a traditional prayer. Sometimes we don't have anything in particular to say ourselves and want to turn our thoughts to God. Sometimes we want to join our voices in unison with others in prayer. For these times, "form" prayers are wonderful options.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

This prayer is Jesus's response - in Luke 11 - when the disciples ask Him how they should pray. The Catechism has a beautiful discussion on this prayer; begin with paragraph 2759.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women; and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Wondering what the scriptural basis is for this prayer? Check out the Catechism beginning with paragraph 2676.
